The Jank Tank: Valakut Dredge?

Hey guys! Sushi here, and today we have a Jank Tank deck! Just wanted to say right away, sorry for not doing an article yesterday, had some personal issues, but I have a fun article in the works that’ll be posted tomorrow or tonight to make up for it! Anyway, today we are looking at Valakut Dredge – a deck submitted to me by fwdr3! This deck is based around using Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle and Splendid Reclamation to deal a ton of damage to your opponent – and it’s fun when it works! The original deck was submitted with no sideboard, however I will be creating a sideboard for it in the latter part of this article! But, let’s get straight to it!

The Deck

Valakut Dredge was a very random deck to play. When I played my first game with it (completely blindly), I didn’t know how to play it as I thought I’d milled my win condition, which is really bad! But, once I worked it out it worked very well, going 4-1 in the 5 BO1 matches I played, losing against UW Control!

Creatures (11)
Insolent Neonate
Golgari Thug
Stinkweed Imp

Spells (20)
Conflagrate
Faithless Looting
Lightning Axe
Cathartic Reunion
Life from the Loam
Mystic Retrieval
Splendid Reclamation

Artifacts (4)
Shriekhorn
Lands (25)
Boseiju, Who Shelters All
Cinder Glade
Sheltered Thicket

Stomping Ground
Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle
Wooded Foothills

The deck works essentially as a Dredge deck – using cards like Golgari Thug and Stinkweed Imp to dredge cards from your library to your graveyard. But instead of standard payoffs using Narcomeba and Bloodghast, the deck uses Splendid Reclamation to return all lands from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped – with Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle dealing 3 damage for each of these lands.

Critiques and ‘Improvements

I do have a few issues with this iteration of this deck – I find it weird that the deck isn’t running any copies of Snapcaster Mage, as it can make 12 copies of Splendid Reclamation, as well as Mystic Retrieval. To be honest, you could also use Mission Briefing to make 16 copies, however that does seem a bit redundant… I feel as if cards like Insolent Neonate aren’t relevant either, they’re good but there’s so many better options for those deck slots.

Also, the lack of sideboard is scary. With graveyard and land hate being huge in the current meta, it’s scary that both of the deck’s win conditions are built around those strategies. With no black mana also, there’s no way to cast any of the dredge creatures as beaters. In a sideboard, Nature’s Claim would be vital! Those pesky Leyline of the Voids and Blood Moon[/c]s!
Also, some countermagic would be nice, especially with the blue mana! I would suggest Logic Knot or Cryptic Command – as they both work really well with dredge in mind!

Anyway, here’s my iteration of the deck!

I am a bit special though, when it comes to making decks…

Next week on The Jank Tank, I will be talking about my experience with my iteration of Valakut Dredge! Thanks so so much for reading – this article is a lot shorter since I don’t have a deck from ‘last week’ to show off. I hope you enjoyed it though! Feel free to comment or tweet me @sushiske or the site @sparkmtg with what you think about my stupid shenanigans! I bid thee farewell for now, though.

Edit: Right after I posted this I realised I forgot to add more U sources since I tried to add UR cycling lands but realised there aren’t any. So I removed 2 Sheltered Thickets, 1 Bojesu and 1 Stomping Ground to add some more Steam Vents and a playset of Tarns – my bad!
